Ball Python Care Basics for New Owners

Getting Started with Your First Ball Python

Ball pythons are one of the best reptile species for keepers at any level. They are calm, manageable in size, and come in an incredible variety of colors and patterns. But like any living animal, they need proper care to thrive.

Enclosure Setup

A single ball python does well in a 40-gallon enclosure or a 4x2x2 PVC enclosure. The key factors are:

  • Warm side temperature: 88-92°F
  • Cool side temperature: 76-80°F
  • Humidity: 60-70% (higher during shed)
  • At least two hides — one on the warm side and one on the cool side

Substrate

Coconut husk, cypress mulch, or a mix of both work well for maintaining humidity. Avoid cedar and pine shavings, as they can be harmful to reptiles.

Feeding

Ball pythons eat appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents. For most juveniles, that means small rats or large mice every 7-10 days. Adults can eat medium to large rats every 10-14 days.

Handling

Give your new ball python at least 5-7 days to settle in before handling. After that, keep sessions to 10-15 minutes at first and build up gradually. Avoid handling within 48 hours after feeding.

Water

Always provide a clean water dish large enough for the snake to soak in. Change the water every 1-2 days.

With the right setup and a consistent routine, ball pythons are remarkably easy to care for. If you have questions about getting started, we are always happy to help.
