Ball Python Care for Beginners in Florida

Ball Python Care for Beginners in Florida

Florida is a fantastic state to keep ball pythons. The warm climate reduces heating costs, the reptile community is thriving, and quality breeders are nearby. But whether you're in Miami, Jacksonville, or Daytona Beach, there are some fundamental care principles every new ball python owner needs to know.

Enclosure Size

Adult ball pythons need a minimum of a 4' x 2' x 2' enclosure (like a PVC enclosure from reputable brands). Hatchlings can start in a smaller tub or a 20-gallon tank, but should be upgraded as they grow.

Temperature and Humidity

Ball pythons are tropical animals and need:

  • Hot spot: 88–92°F (use an under-tank heater or radiant heat panel)
  • Ambient (cool side): 76–80°F
  • Humidity: 60–80% (higher during shedding)

Florida's naturally humid climate can actually help maintain appropriate humidity levels — a benefit local keepers appreciate.

Feeding

  • Feed frozen/thawed prey — never live, as live prey can injure your snake
  • Hatchlings: fuzzy mice or rat pinkies every 5–7 days
  • Adults: adult mice or small/medium rats every 7–14 days
  • Use feeding tongs, not your bare hands

Substrate

Recommended substrates include:

  • Coconut fiber / coco coir
  • Cypress mulch
  • Bioactive substrate mixes

Avoid pine, cedar, or sand — these can cause respiratory or digestive issues.

Hides

Ball pythons are shy by nature. Provide at least two hides — one on the warm side, one on the cool side. A snug fit is key; they feel more secure in tight spaces.
