Ball Python Feeding Basics for Beginners
Feeding Your Ball Python
Feeding is one of the most common topics new ball python owners ask about. Here is a straightforward overview to help you get it right.
Prey Size
The general rule is to offer prey that is about the same width as the widest part of your snake's body. For most juveniles, that means small rats or large mice. Adults typically eat medium to large rats.
Frozen-Thawed vs. Live
We strongly recommend feeding frozen-thawed prey. It is safer for your snake (live rodents can bite and injure), more convenient, and easier to store.
Feeding Schedule
- Hatchlings and juveniles: Every 5-7 days
- Sub-adults: Every 7-10 days
- Adults: Every 10-14 days
Feeding Refusals
Ball pythons are known for occasional feeding strikes, especially during winter months or breeding season. If your snake skips a meal, do not panic. Wait a week and try again. If it goes more than 4-6 weeks without eating, consider reviewing your husbandry.
After Feeding
Avoid handling your snake for at least 48 hours after a meal to allow proper digestion.
Feeding does not have to be complicated. With a consistent routine and the right prey size, most ball pythons are reliable eaters.
